Welcome to the official website of the Gaspé Coalition for the future of the passenger train. Our main objective is to work on the fast resumption of the services of VIA Rail passengers trains on the Gaspé coast. The Coalition of Gaspésiens for the future of the passengers train is associated with no political party.

1-Budd cars: An affordable solution

In 2011, more than 27,000 people took the Chaleur train. A solution must be found to bring this fundamental service back. Budd cars are an affordable solution that could quickly return
passenger rail service between Matapédia and Gaspé. A Budd car is a railcar with 50 or more seats, with its own engine, and weighing half the weight of traditional locomotives.

Quebec Transport Minister Robert Poëti has indicated he is open to the Budd car project proposed by the Gaspé Coalition for the future of the passenger train.
Now it’s time to put pressure on federal Transport Minister Mr Marc Garneau and VIA Rail.

2-Bring the Sputnik back to the Gaspé

The Sputnik was the name Gaspé residents gave to Budd car in the 1960s. The Gaspé Coalition for the future of the passenger train has proposed using Buddcar to quickly and affordably return passenger railservice between Matapédia and Gaspé. The Chaleur train rail service had more than 27,000 passengers in 2011. It is therefore vital that we keep up the pressure.

We already know that Quebec Transport Minister Robert Poëti has expressed openness towards the proposal. Let’s continue to put pressure on federal Transport Minister Mr Marc Garneau and VIA Rail.

3-Budd cars: the answer to the return of VIA Rail

Quebec Transport Minister Robert Poëti intends to maximize railroad development in the Gaspé and he has expressed openness towards the Gaspé Coalition for the future of the passenger train’s Budd car proposal. Budd car are lighter than traditional trains and are self-propelled. This is an affordable solution that VIA Rail can quickly put in place.

Let’s remember that the Chaleur train had more than 27,000 passengers in 2011. It’s a popular service and we must continue to keep up the pressure for its return on VIA Rail and federal Transport Minister Mr Marc Garneau.

4-VIA Rail: Keep up the pressure!

Federal MP and representatives of the Gaspé Coalition for the future of the passenger train found a sympathetic ear in Quebec Transport Minister Robert Poëti when presenting the Budd car proposal to return VIA Rail to the Gaspésie. We must now keep up the pressure on VIA Rail and federal Transport Minister Mr Marc Garneau so they recognise the Budd car proposal as an affordable solution to a real problem for our region.

In 2011, more than 27,000 people took the Chaleur train. It’s a fundamental service for the Gaspé. Keep up the pressure!

5-The Sputnik: An affordable solution

The Budd car, called the Sputnik by Gaspé residents, is a railcar with its own motor and is two times lighter than a train.
The Sputnik is an affordable solution that can be quickly put into service to return passenger rail service between Matapédia and Gaspé.

More than 27,000 people took the Chaleur train before service was cut in 2011. It’s a fundamental service for the Gaspé. Quebec Transport Minister Robert Poëti welcomed the Budd car proposal by the Gaspé Coalition for the future of the passenger train, which wants to return the Sputnik to the Gaspésie.

It is essential to keep up the pressure on VIA Rail and federal Transport Minister.

6-Budd car service: When will Ottawa take action?

Quebec Transport Minister Robert Poëti has welcomed the proposal by federal MP Gaspésie-Îles-de-la-Madeleine and the Gaspé Coalition for the future of the passenger train. The proposal would see the affordable return of passenger rail service with the use of Budd cars on the section between Matapédia and Gaspé, which was recently purchased by the province.
The Budd car, which does not need a locomotive and is much lighter, is the best short-term solution to return VIA Rail service to our region, which, let’s not forget, had more than 27,000 users in 2011.

Together, we can call on VIA Rail and federal Transport Minister to return our rail service!

7-Support for the return of passenger rail service in the Gaspésie

Quebec Transport Minister Robert Poëti, following a meeting with federal MP Gaspésie-Îles-de-la-Madeleine and representatives of the Gaspé Coalition for the future of the passenger train, welcomed the Budd car proposal, also known as the Sputnik in the Gaspésie. We must now convince VIA Rail and federal Transport Minister Marc Garneau that the Budd car is the most affordable solution and the quickest to implement in the Gaspé.

Several thousand people in the Gaspé already support the Budd car proposal. Let’s keep up the pressure for the return of VIA Rail!

8-Budd cars: An affordable solution

The Gaspé Coalition for the future of the passenger train has a proposal to return VIA Rail service to the Gaspé. Budd cars have their own engine and weigh half that of traditional engines.
It’s the best short-term solution to return passenger rail service to our region, which served 27,000 passengers in 2011. This affordable and easy-to-implement solution has been well received by Quebec Transport Minister Robert Poëti.

It’s now up to VIA Rail and federal Transport Minister Marc Garneau to come to a decision. Keep up the fight!

9-Passenger trains: A fundamental service

Did you know that 27,000 people used the Chaleur passenger rail service in 2011? Its return is vital to our region. That is why the Gaspé Coalition for the future of the passenger train, represented by federal MP Gaspésie-Îles-de-la-Madeleine and two delegates (Gilles Lamy and Bernard Babin), presented Quebec Transport Minister Robert Poëti with a Budd car proposal to return rail service to the Gaspésie.

We must keep up the pressure on VIA Rail and federal Transport Minister Marc Garneau to return our passenger rail service.
