Repair work on the Matapedia to Gaspe railroad

Fall 2020 update

Section 1 Matapedia to Caplan (80 miles)

Only section currently open to rail traffic. Many culverts are replaced!

In the spring of 2019, Hamel Construction is awarded the $22.4 million contract to build two new railroad bridges (Mile 60.10 and Mile 60.30 Cascapedia Subdivision) over the Cascapedia river in the Municipality of Cascapedia-Saint-Jules.

Abutments and piers of the second new railroad bridge in Cascapedia-Saint-Jules are completed.

Steel beams ties and railing are installed on the second new railroad bridge.

Flood and log jam on December 1 and 2 damage the old railroad bridges still in service in Cascapedia-Saint-Jules. The old railroad bridges, built in 1895, are officially closed to rail traffic after the log jam is removed and inspections are carried out on December 5 and 6. On December 9 the owner of the railroad Transport Quebec announces it is speeding up the work to complete the new railroad bridges by the end of 2020!

When these two new railroad bridges are inaugurated and put into service freight trains on the first section of the railroad will be able to run at full capacity. Repairs to the first section of the railroad will be finished!

Section 2 Caplan to Port-Daniel-Gascons (44 miles)

In the summer of 2020, Soudex Inc. In New Richmond is awarded the $97,000 contract to do brush cutting work. Brush cutting work is carried out on some sections.

In the summer of 2020, Hamel Construction is awarded the $5.7 million contract to build a new railroad bridge (Mile 80.90 Cascapedia Subdivision) over the Watt creek in the Municipality of Caplan.

Work on the railroad bridge in Caplan is started in September 2020.

The old railroad bridge is dismantled. Ground preparation work is carried out. Work on the base of the abutments and piers for the new railroad bridge is started.

In the summer of 2020, CRT Construction is awarded the $15.5 million contract to repair the railroad bridge (Mile 23.00 Chandler Subdivision) over the Port-Daniel river in the Municipality of Port-Daniel-Gascons.

Work on the railroad bridge in Port-Daniel-Gascons is started in October 2020.

Partial dismantling of the old railroad bridge is carried out. Work to redo the pillars is expected to start soon.
